On a beautiful late winter day, Jody, and I drove to the Metro Center for Community Advocacy to meet their executive director, Darlene, and learn more about the work we've been supporting for more than 20 years. Metro Center is a place for women and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse. They offer an in-shelter place for families to come and begin rebuilding their lives. Then, with the help of social workers, the families are moved into rapid housing, sent to a known safe place, or further helped as they recover from the damage violence does in their lives. I am particularly close to the cause as last fall I went to Arizona after a friend from high school had been murdered by her husband. We never know what is going on behind closed doors and that this is a safe place for families to go brings me hope that eventually we will be able to break the violence cycle in our most intimate relationships.

Darlene was kind enough to share with me one story of a woman who they had helped by sending her back to out-of-state family and away from her abuser. The woman wrote this to the organization, "Thank you guys so much for helping me out, without yall I would be homeless and on the streets with my daughter. Due to my daughter's father being in jail, I had to leave soon as possible since I’m a first-time mom and I really don’t know what I am doing so I came to Indiana to be with my mom and my little sister and my big brother so I have plenty of help there. I just want to thank yall so much for getting me and putting me and my baby in a safe place, for the first night I was scared but at the same time, I didn’t have to go to bed scared that someone was going to kill me. I very much appreciate everything yall have done for me. Wish I can pay yall guys back. Thank you guys once again you guys saved me and my baby’s life."

To stregthen our partnership, Christ the King's Preschool Board and Congregation's Council have agreed to sponsor one child to attend our school if they are in-shelter, or while they are in rapid housing.

We thank God for safe places, our community, our community partners and everyone who cares to protect women and children.
